We’ve all had those days when we wake up, hit snooze 10 times and then make yourself late for work. The alarm clock refused to cooperate and neither does your hair. You get to go to work looking like you’ve been struck by lightning, and your face is anything but Picasso! It’s on these days that we face the ultimate challenge: Acting pretty when we don’t feel our best, especially when everything seems to be conspiring against us. Well, in reality, we have to help ourselves (stop hitting snooze- but that’s for another conversation). Sometimes we allow things to become normal or routine when they are truly unnecessary.
I remember feeling like I didn’t have enough winter clothes. I broke down and hit Shein up for 7 cute sweat suits. It barely cost me $100 and made me feel like I had what I needed. Meanwhile, I had been feeling unprepared for years. I’m in Florida, so winter really isn’t a big thing but I wanted something for the handful of cold days we experience. In hindsight, I don’t know why it took me so long to take care of myself! I can guarantee my kids had what they needed but I wouldn’t “sacrifice” the money for myself. When the clothes arrived, I felt relieved. I hadn’t realized that not providing myself with the things I needed was having a subconscious effect on me. I felt the release as soon as that was no longer an issue.
One thing about me, I always act the part even when my mind is telling me otherwise. If I don’t have what I need I pretend that I do (not always the healthiest thing to do). If I felt ugly I pretended I was unaware my face was giving homeless! Over the years I realized, those little things can add up and start to overflow my cup. I also realized, while I can’t stop every bad day, I can lessen the impact by better preparing.
Instead of always dealing with the issues as they come I started prepping my life for them. Things that I needed, which made things easier were worth the investment. For instance, buying and air fryer and teaching my 10 year old how to bake a personal pizza, was the best thing I could have done for my own self esteem. Not only was my son learning to be independent, on the days when I had no energy to cook, my son very proudly, made us dinner. Before I knew it, he had french fries, hotdogs, corn dogs, hamburgers and more down to a science! No mom guilt for being a human!
I haven’t swept a floor in years! What I have done, is saved my back and time by purchasing a cordless vacuum. If you are not vacuuming your hard wood or tile floor you are doing yourself a disservice. Yes, it gets in the corners! Yes, it takes half the time and ¼ of the energy! Most importantly, yes, the kids love to do it! A win is a win! (I get off track easy! Let me get back to acting pretty!)
We have all been there when you wake up, stumble into the bathroom, and stare into the mirror and you realize the amount of work you need to look decent, does not match the amount of time you have before you need to hit the door. No amount of brushing, combing, or hair product can tame this wild beast (or so you think). Fear not! Embrace your inner lion(ess) and turn that bedhead into a fierce and fabulous style. Who needs perfect hair when you can rock the “I-woke-up-like-this”? Create your bad hair day hack! It can be as simple was water, blue magic, bristle brush and an afro puff pony tail! If you want to be fancy, add a good edge control! You’ve got a 5 minute hair do that is always giving! Pair it with easy lip and liner set and you go from dreadful to fabulous! The best look is when it takes no effort to look like maximum energy went into your appearance.
At the end of the day, regardless of how you look or how you feel, you are blessed, highly favored and created in His divine image. At no point in time, should you act like what you’ve been through or what you’re going through! Walk in His promises for you and use that as a reminder to other’s as well. So yes, I can look homeless and act blessed!
